Feed and Hay Suppliers

One of the best ways to decrease your dependance on hay is to grow your own pasture. These droughts and chronic hay shortages can be very annoying and expensive. If you can grow pasture, I recommend you call Diamond R and talk with Bruce Mathews 386-328-7610. You can schedule them to both fertilize and seed your property - easy and they do a very good job. In the winter just about anyone can grow rye and it's a nice source of roughage for the herd. Rotating paddocks and pastures to eliminate overgrazing is important. After November 1 it's usually cool enough to grow winter rye -- it should last until hot weather returns in April -- then the Bahia or Bermuda can take over for the summer. Bahia is generally easier to grow and seed and is more drought tolerant.
